1. WHEN DOES THE TRACK & FIELD SEASON START AND END?
The little athletic season runs from October 2024 until March 2025.
Our first competition night is October 11th and events commence from 5:45pm, so please arrive by 5:30pm.
2. WHERE IS MOORABBIN LAC?
Our athletics track is at G.R. Bricker Reserve on Rowans Road, Moorabbin.
3. WHAT AGES DO YOU CATER FOR?
Children aged 5 to 16 years are eligible to compete. Membership is open to all children who, at the end of December, will be at least 5 years of age and no older than 16 years of age. Age groups are based on your child’s age as of 31st December each year, for example if your child is 10 on the 31st of December, they will be an Under 11 for the summer season starting in October of that year.
4. WHAT HAPPENS ON A FRIDAY NIGHT?
If it’s your first night/trial please make your way to the table to the left of the gate and see Charli our registrar for more info.
After checking in make your way onto the track and find the appropriate designated area for your Childs age group.
All athletes undertake four events each week.
5. HOW DO I REGISTER FOR LITTLE ATHLETICS?
Registration is done via the LAVic website which can be accessed through this link:
https://lavic.com.au/membership/
6. CAN I TRIAL ATHLETICS?
Yes, when registering for the first time you have the option to select the ‘Trial Athlete Offer’, this means your trialling athletes can opt for 2 weeks free to come and try out our club and make sure they enjoy it before paying for the season. After you’ve completed your trial sessions you can opt to continue with the full registration or cease.
Please note once you’ve completed your trial, we will need you to make a decision about your rego, you can not continue to come for free.
The Trial Athlete Offer can be accessed through this link:
https://lavic.com.au/membership/new-member/trial-athlete-offer/
7. CAN I COME AND TRY WITHOUT REGISTERING?
We plan an Open day every year for people to see what we do
8. CAN I REGISTER AND NOT PAY?
Yes, the website portal allows you to register and not pay, we recommend if you are trialling to partake via the Trial Athlete Offer, rather than a full registration without pay.
Only fully financial athletes will receive a ‘competition bib/patch’ and have results recorded.
Until then they will compete without points being scored.
9. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
10. WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO WEAR?
All athletes must wear a Moorabbin t-shirt, singlet or crop top with black shorts/running tights.
LAVic competition rules state at any regional/state events and athlete must be in regulated uniform and shorts must be without pockets or unapproved logos measuring larger than 4cmx4cm.
Athletes must pin their competition patch to their shirt so the barcode is visible and can be scanned at the end of each race.
We recommend a supportive type of running/athletic style shoe for competition and any athlete may choose to wear spikes from U11 and up.
11. WHEN IS TRAINING AND WHO CAN ATTEND?
Club training is held on Wednesday nights from 5:00pm. It’s a great opportunity for athletes to practice and refine their technique in chosen events.
12. WHAT HAPPENS IN WINTER?
Little athletics is run during spring/summer so we do not run competition during winter, however we are affiliated with Bayside Cross Country.
To register you must be a winter member of Little Athletics Victoria more details can be found here.
13. REGIONAL AND STATE EVENTS
Throughout the season athletes will have the chance to represent our club at the following Regional/State events. All these events are open for any of our athletes to compete in, we must receive expressions of interest before the deadline for them to be entered.
- Regional Relay Championships: this is a team-based event where athletes represent Moorabbin with their teammates and compete against other teams from other centres within SMR at a variety of relay races. This regional event is a qualifier for the State Relay Championship. Athletes must nominate and express their interest if they wish to be involved.
- Regional Track & Field Championships: athletes may nominate for up to four (4) individual events to compete in over a two (2) day event. Athletes will be sent instructions on how to register for this event and there will be additional costs to participate. This event is a qualifier for the State Track & Field Championships.
- State Combined Event Championship: this event is similar to the concept of a heptathlon or decathlon. U9 – U13 athletes compete in five (5) events in one full day of competition. U14 – U16 compete in seven (7) events across two days of competition.
Like our centre competition, regional and state events cannot run without volunteers. Centres are assigned hours of ‘duty’ and all families with athletes registered for regional and state events will be expected to assist with duty allocations.
Our Competition Manager will provide more detail later in the season.
14. EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS/CARERS
This is very important. Our centre is run completely by volunteers. We all have children competing at the centre, just like you.
Parents/carers will be assigned duty approximately twice a season for either setup, pack up, BBQ duties etc.
In addition, we rely on families to assist with the running of each age group, every week.
This may mean recording, measuring or general ‘crowd control’ of the age group.
Little athletics is not set up to enable a drop-off environment. We expect parents/families to be present most weeks.
We cover the costs of coaching for anyone who is interesting in helping out each week.
Our Handbook is a good go-to if you have technical questions such as how to measure the shot put etc.
